Re: My 90 2.5 (used to be) petrol
Yeah I still have a list of parts I want before it's done, it'll realistically be well through the winter if not the spring before I do it, I still need: Complete Exhaust system from a TD (hoping the right stainless one appears on ebay), Extended oil cooler pipes (thinking about getting new ones made) Extended power steering pipes, A new radiator, A new housing for the radiator/intercooler, Service items for the Engine, new fuel pipes, and probably a Snorkel.gti-90 wrote:Hi ross. when is the engine swap happening? do you still need to get more parts? exhaust etc. cheers
I also need to cut off the brackets on the front chassis cross member and weld them back an inch lower, but that'll probably be a job for when the actual engine swap is going ahead

Re: My 90 2.5 (used to be) petrol
Well tonight I made a start, I don't know exacly what I need for the oil cooler pipes or the power steering pipes, but the oil leak I had from the crankshaft rear seal has become so bad it's not actually practical to use the landy.... so I've decided to just get on with it and I'll get the parts I need as I go.
I've kept the exhaust from the disco so I'll be able to fabricate something to get me going until I get a proper replacemet, same goes for the radiator....
Let the fun begin!!

Well as you can see the engine's out, so much easier with both sitting side by side!!
I spoke to a guy at Macgregors Hydraulics in Inverness yesterday, who said he'd easily be able to sort out my oil cooler and power steering pipes, so it's coming together nicely at the moment!

Starting to come together by the sounds of it keep the updates coming in
Re: My 90 2.5 (used to be) petrol
Stripped all the old wiring loom from the tdi, and decided I dont need any of it, the 90's loom is simpler but still has the relevant wires, and all still the correct colours, for everything except the fuel pump solenoid. I'll take the live that ran to the ignition coil for this. Also removed the engine mounts, as I will be using the ones from the old engine.
I didn't have a clutch alignment tool, so did it by eye, and it looks like I've got it spot on, as the engine is now sitting in place with the hoist, and is loosely bolted to the bellhousing. Once that's tightened up I'll reconnect the wiring to the starter, alternator, oil pressure switch, water temp sender, fuel pump solenoid, then see what I can do with the fuel pipes.....

Re: My 90 2.5 (used to be) petrol
It's getting there!
All the wiring is done (eventually) using the original loom for the 90, the engine is fully bolted to the gearbox, and the chassis mounts, the fuel system is fully connected after having to extend the pipes running to the filter housing in order to allow it to reach it's position on the bulkhead.
The modified exhaust downpipe is now fitted after having to relocate the clutch slave cylinder pipe (not so easy with the engine in place.....) I have removed the old leaky tin power steering resovoir and replaced it with the disco one, and have shortened the 90's low pressure rerurn pipe to it from the pas pump. I need to get the high pressure pipe from the disco extended by about four inches to complete the power steering, so I'll have it done along with the oil cooler pipes.
I've connected up the pipework to the heater matrix, after a fair bit of measuring and cutting of the old pipes, and using a couple of offcuts of stainless pipe.
Still lots to do, I need to drop the mounts on the front crossmember to allow the radiator to sit down where it should, it's still going to be housed in the surround that came out of the discovery, which will also need modifying, I'd prefer to but a proper defender one, but haven't been suscessful in finding one yet.
Also need to build an exhaust system, and the plumbing for the radiator

Re: My 90 2.5 (used to be) petrol
Was in Inverness today to get the pipes done, I went to the hydraulics section of MacGregors industrial, and he did all three pipes for just £15 quid, and he had them done within two hours.
That in my opinion, is fantastic service!!

IT'S ALIVE!!!!
Sort of.
Well technically there has been a massive breakthrough tonight, I have driven my Land Rover the half mile from the workshop to the house and back again.... through 10" deep snow, with the snorting tdi complete with no exhaust or air filter, and it was brilliant!!
Except for one thing.... I have no clutch.
Not quite there yet....

Re: My 90 2.5 (used to be) petrol
It sounded fantastic, I think I'll look at the possibility of a straight through system and cone filter....tat2_al wrote:I bet that sound superb with the breathing so freely
Re: My 90 2.5 (used to be) petrol
Every engine deserves a straight through exhaust and performance filter!!
Re: My 90 2.5 (used to be) petrol
Have you still got your old radiator ..? Full size one with oil cooler..? If so and it's pretty good what do you want for it...?

Re: My 90 2.5 (used to be) petrol
Hi Dan, yes I still have the old radiator, and it's in good condition, but being from a petrol model it has no oil cooler.
Let me know if it's still of use to you.
